Moscow metro has increased by almost 30% in the last 7 years
Deputy Mayor for Urban Development and Construction Marat Khusnullin announced that the total length of the capital’s metro system grew for 126 km in the last 7 years. About 30% of the length was added during this period. The number of the new opened stations is 64.
The metro system of Moscow develops rapidly, now 37 areas have newly opened stations. The ambitious project that is currently under construction is 70 km long Bolshaya Koltsevaya Linea (The Big Circle line), comprising 32 stations. It is the largest circle line in the world now.
In 2018, 8 new stations have already been put in operation, 5 belong to the circle line and 3 to the Lyublinsko-Dmitrovskaya line. By the end of the year there will have been constructed 16 new stations.
As for the other Russian cities with the population over 1 million people, there is no significant progress there in the terms of metro construction. Several have their metro systems with barely enough stations and those far from the capital sometimes have no metro at all.
The Northern capital of Russia – St Petersburg – does better than many other Russian cities, there were constructed 5 stations in the last 6 years, all of them to be opened in 2018, with the two of them being specially constructed for the FIFA World Cup, Novokrestovskaya and Begovaya. The stations in the East-Southern district Kupchino will be opened in December, according to the plans.
The future of the Krasnoselsko-Kalininskaya line became undefined now. Previously it was designed with 6 stations, but the number of the stations was reduced recently to only 2. The latest St. Petersburg International Economic Forum brought the decision of the City Administration to partner with the Turkish metro construction workers in the future. It is for the first time in the history of St Petersburg’s metro, as all the stations of its metro system were built by OAO Metrostroy, local-based company.
Mostly, the pace of metro construction is satisfying only on Moscow, other Russian cities have to wait for their better times.
