According to the project, the new road 10.5 km long will be constructed in the central part of Bulgaria with five tunnels with a total length of 4 km. The tunnel through Shipka will be the largest of them. Its future length is 3.2 km.
The tunnel will provide a fast connection between the Southern and the Northern parts of the country. The Turkish companies Duygu Muhendislik, and Kolin compete for the contract. Also, the Chinese company China Communication Construction Company and several associations from Bulgaria are interested. The construction is expected to be completed in 3.5 years.
