The decision was made based on economic efficiency. The preliminary study suggests a 1 km long tunnel construction and disposal of 1.5 million cubic meters of the soil. The project was chosen among other possible immersed tunnels with 6 or 8 lanes, and also the more expensive suggestions of the TBM constructed tunnels, and the projects of widening the existing one.

The Highway traffic George Massey tunnel is 629 meters long. It is located in the Vancouver Metro area, 20 km south of the center of the city. It was opened in 1959. The highway has two lanes in both directions. The tunnel was named after a member of the Legislative Assembly of British Columbia who promoted the idea of the tunnel construction under the Fraser River instead of the ferry connection.
